How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob can do so more than unlocking and locking your vehicle. It is also an advanced antitheft device that makes use specialized technology to communicate with your car to stop theft.

What happens when the battery of your key fob fails? Volvo Cars Mission Viejo's team has all the answers.

How to Unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and functionality compared to a traditional manual key. Batteries eventually degrade and require replacement. If your Volvo keyfob is working only intermittently, your battery might be failing and you'll need to replace it soon.

There are simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Find a clean area to work on. Make a list of all the tools you'll require. Then, locate the battery's hole, and then open it with the flathead, a coin, or other similar tool. Then, carefully remove the battery from its socket by lifting up on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to shield the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

Insert the new battery into the socket after the old one is removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it is placed in all of the clips. Slide the cover towards the key-ring portion until it loosens and is able to slide off. Then, remove  volvo digger key G28 Car Keys  to reveal the hidden key blade. This will be used to unlock your vehicle by the driver's side doors when the battery of your key fob is dead or has been lost.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles come with keyfobs that do more than just unlock and lock the doors. They can also perform useful functions, such as summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. The new Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine using its key fob buttons. But how exactly does it work?

First, locate a clean surface on which you can lay out all the essential items for this project. Lay the fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Utilize a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool to open the battery hatch. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This could cause the fob to stop working properly.

Once the hatch has been opened, slide the battery in its socket. Make sure that the positive (+ side) is facing up. After the clips are secured in place, replace the battery cover and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button, you will disengage the alarm and unlock the driver door. Repeating this action will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button is also useful for rolling down the windows to let in cool, fresh air on a hot summer day. If you'd like more, the keyfob can be used to trigger the ERS which will start the climate control system of your vehicle. It will warm or cool the vehicle to desired temperature setting when the vehicle is parked.

How to Replace the Battery

If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle the way it did in the past then it's time to change the battery. Changing the battery is fairly easy and requires a small screwdriver that is flat or a plastic pry bar tool. Locate the small slot that houses the backup or emergency metal ignition key. Use the blade of a screwdriver or a prybar tool into this slot and gently push the rear of the fob open. After the fob is open you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery, then snap the fob.

Note: Older Volvos use a different battery, the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 10ths of a millimeter smaller than a CR2032 battery, so you'll need to be careful with the placement of the replacement.

How to unlock the Hidden Key Blade

Key fobs from Volvo have advanced in recent years. They are more than just a remote to start and lock your vehicle. They can also roll down the windows and give you an extra boost when you need it. To unlock the full potential of your key fob first, you'll be required to understand how to use it.

The key fob you have is equipped with a transponder, which has been programmed for your Volvo. When you insert the key fob into the ignition barrel, the transponder chip scans the code and compares it with the one that is stored in the start inhibitor module of your car. If the codes do not match, the car will not start. This is an important anti-theft measure that prevents your Volvo from starting if the wrong key is used.

If you lose your key then you'll need to bring it to a dealership to have it repaired and your vehicle reprogrammed. The process can take up to 10 days and will cost a significant amount of cash. You can save money by programming your own computer. You can find the necessary details in your owner's manual or on the internet. Remove the logo and nonlogo covers and place your key fob on an uncluttered surface. Find the gray button on the upper right-hand corner of the fob. Press it down. The cover will then be opened to reveal the CR2032 battery.
